A Reuters report out of China mentiond that Apple had been speaking with the local carriers about connecting their local brand of LTE with the iPhone. There are some compatibilities and similarities between TD-LTE and the LTE that Verizon and AT&T are rolling out in the US. But does that mean Apple is going to build an iPhone 5 with any type of 4G LTE? I think it is unlikely. We do know, however, that Apple has been active in the hiring of LTE engineers over the past few months....

Rumors of Apple’s “iTV” set have spiraled ever since former CEO Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he finally “cracked the television.” Since then, many analysts and publications reported on the iTV—sometimes very inaccurately—claiming it will feature Siri and a Facetime camera for video calls built-in to a larger panel that looks like Apple’s current Thunderbolt displays (at least that’s the consensus). Analysts said Apple will announce the TV set later this year, but one analyst points out why this is not likely....

Ahead of Apple’s financial earnings call covering the holiday quarter, analysts are speculating that the average selling price for iPhones has declined. A report from Bloomberg shares that even though there may be growth for total iPhone units shipped compared with the year ago quarter, predictions say it will be the strong rise in Apple’s services that will increase revenue for the quarter. At first, a $3 decline per iPhone doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you consider multiplying that times the estimated 76 million iPhone sold in the holiday quarter, it’s almost a quarter of a billion dollar revenue decrease....

In case you hadn’t heard: BlueStacks, the company with around 10M+ using its technology that brings Android games to PC and Mac, has recently been working on a new dedicated Android gaming console that aims to compete with OUYA and others in the space. It’s yet to launch, and up until today its big differentiator has been its $6.99/per month subscription model, but today it becomes the first to bring iOS games to the TV....

Apple has introduced a small but interesting tweak to the way it markets apps on the App Store. As you can see in the screenshot above, non-paid apps are now presented with the word ‘GET’ rather than ‘FREE’. While the reason for the change in how Apple is presenting non-paid apps isn’t clear, it’s likely due to the popularity of ‘freemium’ apps and in-app purchases, something that has been the source of controversy for Apple in the past…...

iOS 14 has brought several new privacy features, and there are more to come with App Tracking Transparency — which will let users opt out of being tracked by apps. As the launch of this new option approaches, Apple has begun to reject apps using third-party SDKs that collect user data without consent. Developers can implement some SDKs that help them track users by a method called “device fingerprinting,” which uses multiple attributes such as the device model, IP address, and other data to identify a person across the internet....

With the new MacBook Pro now shipping to customers, iFixit have got their hands on the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and have disassembled it and completed their usual teardown. The iPad maker is defending its moniker by insisting the device became synonymous with both the company name and the tablets. Apple wrote in the official court documents pertaining to its legal spat with Samsung that its key supplier “attempts to harass us” by demanding to see unreleased iPhone and iPad devices. Samsung’s request, of course, came as a response to a federal court ruling granting Apple access to the already released Samsung smartphones and tablets that the gadget maker from California alleges infringe on its patents and copy their look and feel....

Apple has acquired popular iOS sleep tracking platform and hardware maker Beddit. While specific details of the acquisition are unclear at this point, Beddit has updated the privacy policy on its website to announce the acquisition and note of a privacy policy change… Furthermore, the Beddit iOS app was updated today to reflect that change in personal data collection policy that comes as part of the Apple acquisition. AAPL’s share price has held steady in after-hours trading despite low guidance on Q2 revenue. Analysts say that the stock had already dropped in response to reports of reduced iPhone X production targets, and the Q2 guidance was thus in line with expectations … AAPL at one point climbed 3% in after-hours trading, before falling back. Anand, as per usual, does one of the more in-depth reviews we’ve seen of the Thunderbolt Displays. Some interesting notes: The Thunderbolt Display uses less power than the previous Cinema Display at its dimmest setting (likely just panel efficiency variance) and draws a bit more at max brightness. Pegasus hardware seems to cause serious audio issues which corrupts sound while large file transfers are happening. Expect a fix. There are some nuances with display daisy chaining....

Unnamed congressional staffers have accused Apple of trying to water down an anti forced labor bill that would place obligations on US companies to ensure their supply chain was not involved in such abuse. The bill aims to end the use of forced Uighur labor in the Xinjiang region of China. The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act passed 406 to 3 in the House in September and has now reached the Senate....
