Both Samsung and Apple have slipped in smartphone marketshare globally during the first quarter of 2014 according to the latest numbers from research firm Strategy Analytics. While global smartphone shipments grew 33 percent to 285 million units in Q1 compared to 213.9 million in the same quarter last year, Apple and Samsung collectively dropped from over 50 percent of the market to 47 percent. The report cites strong growth of “second-tier smartphone brands” such as Huwaei and Lenovo and lack of entry-level devices in markets abroad from Apple as the main contributors to slowed growth for Samsung and Apple....

Apple plans to improve work conditions at its iPhone and iPad-assembling Chinese factories, and Foxconn executives announced today that it would share the initial price of that venture with the Cupertino, Calif.-based Company. According to Reuters: Apple and Foxconn began bettering conditions for workers earlier this year by raising wages in mid-February from 16 percent to 25 percent, and then they hired thousands of new laborers the next month to reduce overtime in the factories....

Apple has long been rumored to be setting up a manufacturing presence in India, with a report most recently outlining some of the concessions Apple was seeking from the Indian government. Now, a new report from the Times of India claims that Apple will start manufacturing the iPhone in India in April of 2017, while the company has also posted a handful of job listings in the country. The report, citing industry sources, claims that Taiwanese OEM maker and Apple partner Wistron is setting up a facility in Bengaluru....

An analyst round-up by Philip Elmer-DeWitt shows clear expectations of the fourth quarterly year-on-year decline in a row of Mac sales. Most of the estimates are very strongly clustered around the 5M mark, with the average suggesting a 10.79% fall from last year’s 5.7M to 5.1M this year. The sales estimates among the 19 analysts surveyed ranged from 4.65M at the low end to 5.8M at the top end – but it’s notable that just two companies are predicting sales growth …...

Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer and poster for the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film, Antlers. Following his multiple Oscars wins for The Shape of Water last year (including, the prize for Best Picture), del Toro set an overall deal with Fox to develop sci-fi, horror, and/or fantasy films as a writer, producer, and/or director. The first movie under the deal is Antlers, which del Toro produced with Crazy Heart and Hostiles filmmaker Scott Cooper making his horror directing debut from a script cowritten by Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca....

Apple today updated Aperture to 3.0.2 to support iPad and fix some lingering problems from the previous releases. Apple says 3.02 “Enables support for importing photos from iPad to the Aperture Library, as well as syncing of photos to iPad.” Interesting. Why would you need to import photos from a device without a camera? Yes, the iPad has a camera attachment, but why wouldn’t you do that directly to your Mac?...

Earlier today, Apple issued a response to inquisitions from Senator John Thune regarding its iPhone battery debacle. Apple explained in the response that it is “considering” offering rebates to those customers who paid full price for battery replacements. The letter, shared in full by Business Insider, also offers some additional details on whether or not iPhone 8 and iPhone X users could soon be plagued by the same throttling… Thune, who heads the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, sent Apple a clear list of questions regarding how it throttles iPhone performance, its rollout of the feature, and more....
