After a three week debate between Apple and the U.S. Department of Justice, the controversial e-book price-fixing case concluded today with final summations at the U.S. District Court in Manhattan. As part of its last remarks, Apple presented a 136-slide deck describing its case against the DOJ in full detail underscoring its argument that they did not conspire with publishers to illegally fix e-book prices. U.S. District Judge Denise Cote is expected to rule on the case in the coming weeks....

I argued yesterday that Apple’s antitrust battles aren’t going to go away and that the company needs to be willing to take positive steps to make things fairer. A report today says that the company is progressing plans to do exactly that, in South Korea. The above chart, so-called “tree view”, renders the primary mobile phone brands in terms of operating profits, excluding loss-making vendors. Yeah, the large orange rectangle is Apple. You can also see that Apple, Research In Motion and HTC combined generated three quarters of total profits during the first quarter of 2011. Yup, just three vendors controlling 75 percent of handset profits. Even more astounding, the achievement is based on just 16 percent of the volumes for the smartphone vendors....

As noted by The 8-Bit, WebM video compatibility has been added to Safari with macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta 2. For those unfamiliar with the format, WebM is a royalty-free video codec created by Google in 2010 — similar to the WebP image format, also developed by Google. Although nearly all current web browsers support WebP video, Apple has never added WebP support to Safari. Back in 2010, Steve Jobs argued that the WebM format was “a mess” and that Apple had no plans to adopt the codec....

Just a little more than a week after acquiring Beats, Apple has now reportedly acquired Spotsetter. According to a report out of TechCrunch, Apple quietly snatched up the company mainly for the technology and two founders behind the service. Spotsetter was founded in 2012 by ex-Google Maps engineer Stephen Tse and Jonny Lee. Both Lee and Tse’s LinkedIn profiles now say they’re employed by Apple, as well. Spotsetter was a social-based search engine that offered personalized recommendations on places to go....

Apple today has updated its feature availability webpage to add 20 new locations to its 3D Flyover feature in Maps. Flyover, for those unfamiliar offers high resolution 3D imagery of locations via the Apple Maps app. Earlier this summer, Apple expanded Flyover to seven new locations and with today’s 20 new additions, the feature is now supported at more than 160 locations. Today’s new additions include cities in Austria, Denmark, Puerto Rico, France, Italy, Sweden, Japan, and more....

A common theme in American Horror Story across its various seasons is that the dead don’t stay dead - while this could be just an attempt to keep certain characters’ longevity outside of the mortal coil, Ryan Murphy’s continual addition of these Purgatory locations could also be a clue. NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim, per CNET, said Apple is set to release a 13.3-inch MacBook Pro, with manufacturing already started. The 13-inch version is said to be cheaper than the current 15.4-inch Retina model (obviously) and will rock a 2,560-by-1,600 display. A smaller device at a cheaper price point could make for a better buy in the consumer eye. The report also noted Samsung, LGD, and Sharp will manufacture the display for the 13....

While a number of things remain uncertain about the upcoming iPhone 8, one of the biggest is price. Analysts, however, continue make their best guesses and today UBS analyst Steven Milunovich is out with his predictions. Milunovich claims that the iPhone 8 will start at $870 and max out around $1,070… Milunovich had earlier claimed that the iPhone 8 would start at a sub-$1,000 price point, likely an important psychological barrier for Apple, and the note sent to investors today offers a bit more detail as to pricing (via Business Insider)....

Today’s Sprint iPhone 5 news hit at around 3PM Eastern (well unless you count June) which sent Wall St. scrambling. Immediately, traders hit Sprint shares driving the third biggest US Wireless company up over 10% in just minutes. It’s not just gravy for Sprint, however, Apple Bull Gene Munster estimates that Apple can now count on selling 6 million more iPhones. AAPL was also up on the news with the broader market....

Analysts and investors appear to be responding nervously to President Trump’s threat to apply a 10% tariff to iPhones, MacBooks and other smartphones and laptops … Apple has so far escaped the threat of a tariffs on iPhones and other products made in China, but Trump yesterday suggested that could change. AAPL was down more than 2% in pre-market trading at the time of writing. “Maybe. Maybe. Depends on what the rate is,” the president said, referring to mobile phones and laptops....
