Marvel Studios has given nearly a decade’s worth of superhero films and it still seems that they are just getting things started. Now in the midst of their third cycle, or ‘phase 3’ of the ongoing story of the Marvel Cinematic Universe their latest efforts are proving to be some of their best works so far. With that in mind, Marvel Studios invited a select group of journalists to their open house to give a glimpse of what adventure awaits movie fans in the near future.
The open house event was to celebrate the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, which screened later in the evening for the junket, and which is set to release in the first weekend of May.
Marvel Studios had some surprises in store for the visiting press, offering a few significant glimpses into other films in development, including Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. Director Peyton Reed (Bring It On) was on hand to walk us through the some of the sequel to the hit movie, Ant-Man. While cameras have yet to begin rolling on the followup, he was able to give a glimpse of the vision that he and Marvel have been working on for Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Brand new concept art for the film was revealed which featured Ant-Man, Giant-Man, and the Wasp in varying stages of the movie. Key frames were revealed of the duo escaping a dog attack while miniaturized, as well as Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) in his gigantic form in the city streets. More Giant Man action!
However, what may be most interesting observation was a brief look at the title character’s new costumes. Lang’s costume has been slightly modified even more since we last saw him in Captain America: Civil War according to the creative team, however the changes were not readily apparent in the imagery aside from it appearing more streamlined. While the Wasp’s (Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne) costume looks largely like the uniform revealed in the post-credits button of Ant-Man with added silver sleeves attached to the costume, which would seem to indicate that Hank Pym’s (Michael Douglas) crew have continued to tinker with their technology and gear.
There was also another look at Janet van Dyne’s (the original Wasp) costume as seen in the Ant-Man flashback sequence which would seem to indicate that she will have a greater presence in the upcoming sequel. In fact, it seems distinctly possible that we may get a sequel that features Ant-Men and Wasps participating in multi-generational action. It’s unclear how the lost hero will figure into the plot of the sequel, but she will not be an afterthought or an inconsequential plot point.
The concept art suggests that audiences will be getting more of what worked the first time in Ant-Man and the Wasp, while punching up the action and awe-factor for the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most compact heroes. The first movie caught audiences off guard and it seems that the sequel may surprise viewers once again.
And better yet, this could be there are two Ant-Man characters and two Wasps in Avengers: Infinity War since its shooting during the same time, at the same location, and could even take place during the same point in the MCU timeline.
