Antlers, the latest horror film to be produced by Guillermo del Toro, presents a chilling tale to audiences, and here’s what we know about it so far. The year 2020 doesn’t have a shortage of new horror films on tap to frighten devotees, with a whopping 10 theatrical titles set to terrify moviegoers in only the first quarter. With that much coming up, those wary of high ticket prices may be forced to pick and choose what they spend their time and money on to go see.

Based on the trailers though, Antlers looks like a must watch. Not only is genre powerhouse Guillermo del Toro producing, the screenplay is based on a short story by Nick Antosca, who wrote and produced several episodes of the excellent but short-lived Hannibal TV series. Antosca also went on to create Syfy’s widely acclaimed horror anthology series Channel Zero, which adapted Creepypastas. To top it off, Antlers is directed by Scott Cooper, who helmed Jeff Bridges music drama Crazy Heart and Johnny Depp gangster biopic Black Mass.

With that kind of seasoned crew behind the creative wheel, it seems highly unlikely that Antlers will end up disappointing anyone looking for a good psychological scare. Here’s what we know about the horror film so far.

Antlers Release Date

Antlers was originally set to trot into theaters on April 17, 2020, a date that would’ve seen it enter head to head competition with the animated musical sequel Trolls World Tour, as well as the apocalyptic adventure Monster Problems, starring The Walking Dead veteran Michael Rooker. Now, Monster Problems has been bumped to 2021, Trolls moved up to April 10, and thanks to the Coronavirus outbreak, Disney has officially removed Antlers from its release schedule altogether, at least for now. The Fox Searchlight film is still planned to release sometime in 2020, but it’s unclear exactly when.

Antlers Story Details

From Antlers’ trailers and marketing materials so far, we have a decent idea of what the story entails. That said, Antosca’s history with Hannibal and Channel Zero suggests that there’s probably more going on beneath the surface. Antlers centers on a small town teacher named Julia Meadows, who takes a close interest in a rather odd student named Lucas Weaver. Lucas doesn’t seem to have any family, but he does have a connection to an inhuman creature, the nature of which isn’t entirely clear, but sounds close to the Native American legend of the Wendigo. Julia’s sister Paul is the local sheriff, who finds himself investigating deaths that look to be the work of the creature.

Antlers Cast

Antlers’ cast is led by Keri Russell as Julia Meadows, a TV mainstay who first gained fame on J.J. Abrams’ Felicity, before more recently starring on the award-magnet FX drama The Americans, and appearing in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Jesse Plemons plays her brother Paul, who’s probably best known for playing Tod on Breaking Bad, but was also a regular on the football drama Friday Night Lights. Newcomer Jeremy T. Thomas plays Lucas. The cast also includes prolific character actor Graham Greene (Longmire), and Field of Dreams star Amy Madigan.
