The Galaxy S10 is a beast of a smartphone that was launched in March 2019 by Samsung. It has other two variants or I must say three variants namely the S10e, S10+, and the S10+ 5G versions. These smartphones were the most anticipated smartphones of the 1st half of the year and they delivered it quite right. But, being a Samsung smartphone user for so long, I noticed that the S10 does not have a notification LED. I missed the notification LED as we used to get on older generation smartphones. I am not trying to be skeptical here but they use to give us the idea that about any notification is there waiting to be read by us. Moreover, the RGB notification LED is the best in my opinion as you can set any color according to the app and instantly understand the notification is from which application.

A senior member of the Xda Developer family, Jawomo, created an app that uses the Samsung Galaxy devices Always On Display as a notification indicator. The best thing about this app is that it is available for free and it brings back the notification LED’s productivity in some ways to the Galaxy S10 using the AOD.  Let us understand more about the application in detail.

AODNotify: Activate Notification Alert on Always On Display with Edge Lighting

The AODnotify is a simple yet powerful app for users like me who missed the LED notification lights on the S10 device. This brings in the same functionality of the LED but instead, uses the Always On Display of the S10. Whenever you receive any notification, the app will automatically turn ON the AOD on your device. Moreover, once the notification is read or taken care off, the AOD will automatically turn off.

The application is very nicely made and does not have any impact on the battery life of the device. However, it provides you clear visuals of the notifications on your device and beautifully simulates and lets you do not miss the notification LED. I personally liked this application and it is accurate and never missed a notification as far as I have tested it. You need to simply select which apps are allowed to turn on Always On Display and get notified on important notifications. Furthermore, you can automatically activate the Always On Display while charging your phone.

What’s more interesting is that in the latest beta update, you can now activate an edge lighting animation for incoming notifications. As it is a very new application, we can see more and more features being added to this application and more edge lighting features to come soon.

Features

  • Activate Always On Display on notifications
  • Disable Always On Display when notifications are cleared
  • Select apps which can turn on Always On Display
  • Activate Always On Display while charging
  • Edge lighting animation (beta release only)
  • Minimal battery consumption

Notes

  • This app is only for Samsung devices with Always On Display e.g. S10, S9, Note 9, A50.
  • Huawei, Google or Sony phones do not support this, unfortunately.
  • Samsung may block this app with future updates.
  • Please check if the app is compatible before updating the phone software.
