Apple Adds New Lg 31 Inch 4K Monitor To List Of Supported Mac Displays

Apple has updated its support document detailing 4K displays with Mac support to add LG’s recently announced 31-inch 4K monitor (31MU97).

LG previously announced that the monitor would be Mac compatible through its Mini DisplayPort or 2 HDMI ports, but Apple notes that it will only be supported on OS X Yosemite. The other monitors on the list are supported with OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 or later.

Apple supports the new LG 4K monitor at either 30Hz or 50Hz refresh rates (30Hz over HDMI and 50Hz over Mini DisplayPort), according to the support document. 

So far Apple only officially supports a small number of 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs including the Sharp PN-K321, ASUS PQ321Q, Dell UP2414Q, Dell UP3214Q, and the Panasonic TC-L65WT600.

Apple has yet to update its own Thunderbolt display with a higher resolution comparable to the latest crop of 4K monitors, but it recently released its new 27-inch Retina 5K iMac that will hopefully pave the way for improved support in OS X and an updated standalone display in the near future. 

The new LG 31UM97 is available in the US now for $1399 and rolling out to other markets.
