Update: Apple has refreshed its Leadership webpage to reflect O’Brien’s new role in retail. After 5 years leading Apple’s retail initiatives, Angela Ahrendts will be stepping down as Apple’s senior vice president of Retail in April, according to Apple. In her place, Deirdre O’Brien is taking on the role of SVP of Retail + People. Following the departure of short-lived hire John Browett in 2012, Angela Ahrendts joined Apple in 2014 from fashion company Burberry and led a dramatic redesign of the company’s retail stores, which now number 506 across the globe....

Following the removal of the free iTunes Single of the Week promotion, Apple has created a new section in its music store (at least in the United States, for now) called “Free on iTunes” that gives users the chance to download new songs and TV shows on-the-house. This new section includes music from artists like Purity Ring, Machine Head, and Guster, as well as select episodes of shows from FOX, MTV, SyFy, Animal Planet, and more....

An apparent App Store glitch is resulting in reports of disappearing ratings and reviews. Some developers are reporting that around half their ratings have disappeared. App analytics company App Annie is today out with a new report concerning the second quarter of 2016. At the beginning of this year, we covered the firm’s wrap-up report for 2015, noting that Apple’s App Store brought in 75% more revenue than the Play Store, despite a large difference in downloads. Now, the gap has gotten even bigger as the App Store continues to grow. According App Annie’s Q2 report, the App Store now brings in 100 percent more revenue than the Play Store, despite the Play Store seeing twice the number of indexed downloads as the App Store....

The company reported a loss per share of $0.10 for the quarter on revenue of $132.9 million. For the full fiscal year, Mandiant said it had a revenue of $483 million, representing a 21% increase year over year. It also reported a non-GAAP net loss per share of 51 cents Wall Street was expecting a Q4 loss of $0.13 per share on revenue of $131.57 million. The report sent Mandiant’s shares down 2% in late trading....

As part of Apple’s weekly App Store refresh, the company is currently highlighting iOS games for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that are paid apps with no in-app purchases, MacStories points out. The featured section is notable as in-app purchases have been a source of confusion and frustration for many consumers since their introduction despite being an added revenue source for developers and Apple. TechCrunch reports that the small, 6 person startup that Apple has acquihired is Init.ai. The company was known for its customer service automation. The report notes that there was no intellectual property included in the deal, but was instead about bringing the Init.ai team to Apple to work on Siri. Back at WWDC this past summer, Apple announced a new feature for iOS 11 called Business Chat. It’s likely that Apple made this acquihire to move forward in building out this service....

“Apple and Google have developed a vice-like grip over how we use mobile phones and we’re concerned that it’s causing millions of people across the UK to lose out,” said Andrea Coscelli, chief executive of the UK’s Competition and Market Authority (CMA). The CMA had provisionally found that Apple and Google were able to use their market dominance to create “largely self-contained ecosystems” through iOS and the App Store and Android and Google Play....
